L’ORFEO aims to produce and enable world-leading research; support pedagogical innovation in teaching of opera; and explore innovative approaches to public engagement with opera. Building on sector-leading partnership work between researchers at the University of Leeds and the opera industry, L’ORFEO provides a locus for international opera research and engagement within and between higher education institutions and external partners. Its vision is based on collaboration and equity between stakeholders. It will provide space and visibility for practice (taken in its broadest sense) and a remit for rethinking the scope, scale and value of work in this area, advocate for the value of opera, opera studies and operatic engagement. Central to this vision is an understanding of what opera means and where it, as an industry, is heading: L’ORFEO seeks to play a role in steering that direction.
